I have not read the book, but in reviewing its description it appears

accurate. When I was in med school (started in 1999) and thru the end of my training (finished in 2009), there was always an emphasis on being sympathetic to patients’ discomfort and treating promptly with opiates. Then it became we were creating addicts and overnight prescribing opiates was nearly as challenging as finding men at UVA. I have some need for opiates for managing end of life symptoms like dyspnea but now entirely refer patients back to their PCP or palliative care. I never enjoyed drug reps. While many were attractive young females they could be pushy and were nearly unavoidable when visiting. The opioid crisis is definitely self created by the medical profession and big pharma, however I do not believe the former did it with greedy or nefarious intentions.
